Movie: Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Edge of Tomorrow
Action, Sci Fi

Bloody Tom Cruise (Top Gun, Mission: Impossible)... Sometimes I wish he would retire, he creeps me out just a little bit. He's so tiny and old and he's still making these same movies over and over again... they've gotten more of a sci fi twist lately as well. I have to admit the movies he stars in are never crap but I'm always a little discouraged at him being the action male lead. It's probably just me...

Aliens have invaded and caused Groundhog Day... that's what I got from the preview anyway... This is the second film that I've watched lately that has aliens or machines that rip off the sentinels from The Matrix. Have the alien development departments not got any imagination anymore?

Also starring Bill Paxton (Agents of SHIELD, Twister), Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter, Braveheart) and Emily Blunt (Devil Wears Prada, Looper), Edge of Tomorrow is very much like every other sci fi / action film you've ever seen starring Tom Cruise.

That is all.

Movie: 28 Days Later (2002)

28 Days Later (2002)
Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

This is going to be a series of as short as I can make them reviews on zombie films, largely inspired but this old blog post of Simon Pegg's (Sean Of The Dead, Paul) discussing the different styles of zombies. Simon is a fan of traditional zombies, you know, shuffling mindless brain eating zombies and thinks the running style of zombies is even more unrealistic. I have to disagree, if running zombies are done right they are more than feasible. Especially the virus infected kind. If they have two working legs I cant see why they wouldn't run...

The zombies in this film are runners and have been infected by a virus called Rage. What I like about this one is that it only takes about ten seconds before they are taken over by the virus; that is pretty darn quick. It starts off by a group of animal activists breaking into a primate testing facility and breaking out the Rage infected chimps....retards.

I recognized the main character - Cillian Murphy (The Dark Knight, Inception) - right away, I've seen him in a few things recently. I had no idea that he was in this though... Also spotted was Irish actor Brendan Gleeson who is just amazing in a number of films such as Harry Potter and Troy. Co-starring is Naomie Harris who I didn't recognize until I looked her up, she's been a bond girl most recent 007 flick; Skyfall.

I always judge a zombie flick by the amount of actual zombies... this one seemed a bit too quiet to be a world overrun by the dead.... it makes me even jumpier. But it is interesting to see that in most zombie films it ends up being the humans left who are the ones you have to worry about, not the undead wanting to eat you... How far do you think people will really go to survive?

Movie: The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012)

The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012)
Animation, Adventure, Comedy

I love a good cartoon, like most people, and this style of animation fascinates me. It's made by Aardman Animations, the same people who make Wallace and Gromit, which you can probably tell from just the opening scene. This is a stop-motion clay animation and all of these characters are real little plasticine models! How cool is that? I cannot believe how smart people are to think of these kinds of things, amazing!

As with most animations these days, The Pirates! pulls an awesome English cast including Hugh Grant (Notting Hill), Martin Freeman (Sherlock - awesome show!), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Salma Hayek (Desperado), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), David Tennant (Doctor Who), Brendan Gleeson (Safe House) and Lenny Henry, whose voice I recognise all over the place but you'd all know him as the Shrunken Head from Harry Potter, love it!

The story itself is set in the 1800's in England when Queen Victoria owned most of the sea....except for the Pirates of course! Pirate Captain (Grant) is desperate to win Pirate of the Year. He happens to come across Charles Darwin's ship who instantly recognises that the ships parrot, Polly, is not actually a parrot but the very last Dodo in existence and promptly tries to steal her!

What ensues is hilariousness! Fun for both kids and adults, wouldn't mind watching again.
